Identifying Capital Letters: Lesson 1: What Are Capital Letters?

Capital letters are the big letters in the alphabet, like A, B, C, and so on. They are different from the small letters, which are smaller and look like a, b, c.

We use capital letters in writing for a few important reasons:

  1. Start of a Sentence: When we begin a sentence, like “I like ice cream,” we use a capital letter at the start, like “I.” It tells us that a new sentence is starting.
  2. Names of People and Places: When we write someone’s name, like “Sarah” or the name of a place, like “London,” we use capital letters. It’s like giving them a particular tag.
  3. Essential Words: Sometimes, we use capital letters for important words to catch our attention. For example, “DANGER” or “MOM” in a note.
  4. Abbreviations: When we shorten long words using just their first letters, like “USA” for the United States of America, we use capital letters.
  5. Titles: In books or headings, we use capital letters to make titles stand out, like “The Big Adventure.”

Knowing when to use capital letters is super important for writing because it makes our words clear and organized. So, remember, big letters at the beginning of sentences, names, and essential words make our writing look great!
